Most developers claim one or two AI credit programs. The real play is stacking them strategically — AWS + Google + Microsoft + Anthropic in the right order. This guide shows you how to get $200K+ in free compute legally.

The Credit Stack

ProgramMax ValueEligibility BaselineBest For
Google Cloud for Startups$350KAny registered companyCloud compute + Vertex AI
AWS Activate Portfolio$100KVC-backed or acceleratorAWS Bedrock, SageMaker
Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub$150KSelf-service applicationAzure OpenAI, GPT-4
Anthropic API Credits$5KAPI accountClaude Sonnet production
NVIDIA InceptionGPU discountsAny startupOn-prem GPU infrastructure
Total~$600K

Most founders only claim one of these. The companies that win are the ones that claim all of them.

The Application Strategy

Step 1: Google Cloud for Startups ($350K)

Apply first — highest value, easiest to get.

Tiers:

  • Early Stage ($1K–$5K): Any startup with a working product
  • Growth ($100K+): Via VC partner network (requires qualifying investor)
  • Scale ($350K): Demonstrated revenue or significant VC backing
  • Application URL: cloud.google.com/startup
Timeline: 1–3 business days for early stage
Required: Business email, product description, founding year

Tip: Apply directly, not through a VC. Direct applications for $5K credits are approved in 24 hours. VC-referred applications take 2–3 weeks for the higher tiers but unlock 20x more value.

Step 2: Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub ($150K)

The least-known of the big three — also the fastest to get.

    Application URL: foundershub.startups.microsoft.com
Timeline: 48 hours for most applications
Required: Company website, product description, stage

    Levels:

  • Year 1: $25K in Azure credits
  • Year 2: $50K (if you deployed on Azure in Year 1)
  • Year 3+: Up to $150K for companies meeting milestones
  • Key: The Azure OpenAI Service credits are what you want — GPT-4 and GPT-4o access with your Azure credits. Same model, Azure pricing, corporate compliance features.

    Step 3: AWS Activate

    Two tiers:

Founders tier ($5K): Self-service, no VC required.

    Application URL: aws.amazon.com/activate/founders
    Timeline: 1–2 weeks
    Required: Business email, product URL

Portfolio tier ($25K–$100K): Requires VC or accelerator partner.

Required: Active relationship with AWS partner (VCs, accelerators, incubators)
    Timeline: 2–6 weeks

Key insight: AWS's fiscal Q1 (October–December) has the highest approval rates and fastest processing. Budget just renewed, decisions are fast.

    Step 4: Anthropic API Credits

$5K in credits is available via direct application for Series A and earlier:

    Application URL: anthropic.com/api-access
Note: Apply alongside your commercial account setup

Even $5K of Anthropic credits covers 5 million Claude Sonnet messages at standard pricing — enough for 6-12 months of a production app.

    Timing Strategy

Don't apply for everything at once — stagger by 30–60 days to maintain focus and track utilisation:

Month 0: Google Cloud for Startups (fastest, highest value)
Month 1: Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub
Month 2: AWS Activate (Founders tier — no VC needed)
    Month 3: Anthropic API Credits
Month 4: NVIDIA Inception (ongoing, GPU discounts)
Month 6: Re-apply to Google with VC partner referral for Growth tier

    Maximising Utilisation

    Credits expire. Use them strategically:

  • Run benchmarks on each cloud to determine which has the best price/performance for your specific model workload
  • Use Google for training (TPUs are unique to GCP and significantly cheaper for JAX/PyTorch XLA workloads)
  • Use AWS for production inference if your customers require SOC 2 / HIPAA (AWS compliance is most mature)
  • Use Azure for enterprise sales — CISOs trust Azure, period

  • Common Mistakes

    Don't:

  • Apply with a Gmail address — use your company domain
  • Describe your startup in vague terms — be specific about your AI use case
  • Apply for the maximum tier upfront without a product — start lower and upgrade
  • Forget to track credit expiry dates — most credits expire after 12–24 months
  • Do:

  • Apply from the AWS/Google/Microsoft partner portals, not just the main site
  • Mention other accelerators or investors you've worked with
  • Have a working demo or deployed product when you apply for higher tiers

  • Bottom Line

$200–600K in free compute buys you 12–24 months of runway to build your AI product without paying for infrastructure. That's the difference between a team that pivots vs. a team that ships.
